In 1956 the German nation sponsored a group of children from Kalavryta, bringing them to study in a German school. Germany has provided aid to Kalavryta. Recently the German President visited the site.

A German solider who took part in the massacre reflected on it:

"At the time I was 20 years old. I thought that by killing others I would keep from being killed. All of us thought that to stay alive in Greece we had to do that sort of thing. We had orders to act tough and to drown out all resistance in order to win the war. Now that I'm older, I see that we perpetuated a great crime. ... It was a terrible and irredeemable mistake. I ask forgiveness of all Greeks for what I did as a soldier. I curse the fate that sent me to that area. I admire and respect the Greek people."

And so ends the translation of Dimitris Kaldiris. But it isn't the end of our story.
