| The new life of spring brought no relief. Now the permission to transport food was terminated and German soldiers returned to the village on Good Friday, 1944 to again menace the population with treats of reprisals for the continuing resistance activity in the area. | |

The village needed the train to survive. Once more a priest took up the negotiations, going first to the Germans and then to the Resistance. This time the problem with using the train came from the Resistance. They feared the Germans would use it to bring a large force of soldiers quickly up the valley. Indeed the Resistance ordered the railroad to be destroyed completely. The priest found the resistance headquarters but was refused an audience with the leader. Heedless of the risk to his life, he blasted the Resistance officers, calling them worse than the Germans and demanding to see the commander. The commander relented and saw the priest. However, he told the priest he couldn't allow a train capable of carrying 500 soldiers to exist. In disgust the priest ridiculed the leader, the train can only carry at most 30 soldiers. Is the entire Resistance afraid of 30 Germans? Now insisting he had been "misinformed" about the train, the Resistance leader gave permission and again famine was averted. |
