The southern part of the island

The southern part of Thira offers something you do not expect - peace and calm, even a sense of remoteness.

Little pleasures abound. At first glance this seems like a rather unimpressive restaurant.

But upon entering, it reveals a nicely appointed space, full of light and flowers and contrasts. The food provided by this family run operation was good as well.

This is in the town of Megalochori.

Do you like going to the 'ends of the earth'?

Down at the very, very end of the island is this lighthouse with the sign warning us "do not throw rubbish at the light house area."

It is easily reachable by dirt roads that were in good condition when I visited. Go to Mesa Pigadia and then keep on going.

It was built in 1892 by the French.

The lighthouse has a web page. (Up 3/11/06)

flowers

This flower draped building was found in modern Akrotiri, I think.

The southern location also gives you a new perspective on the location of Fira on the rim.
