The classical era Greeks (500-400BCE) called the walls "Cyclopean" because they thought only the giant Cyclops could have built them.

Remember, this ruin was ancient history to the classical era Greeks.

The walkway is modern of course. Note how the gate is designed at a corner of the wall. To attack the gate you must come under fire from the entire length of wall to your left.

The lion gate. The heads were lost a long time ago. This image reappears on at least one tomb, so it may be a symbol of the city or the royal house that ruled it.

Inside the walls, one of the major features are the circular tombs. There were significant finds here including some amazing gold objects. These finds are all in the National Museum in Athens and not available on site.

 
This ascends up to the upper level of the citadel where the palace is.
