This is just a place holder for the time when I can add more about this interesting place.
Established in 1249 by the Franks, it expanded over time and was a base for the Byzantine empire.
It was a leading cultural and intellectual center of the Byzantine empire.
Later the Venetians, and then again the Turks occupied it. By the 1820's it was abandoned.
