Herodes Atticus was a Roman orator who had this built in memory of his wife Regilla. The site holds about 5,000 people. The site is not open for viewing, other than for performances. If you are in Athens during the summer, consider an open air evening at the theater. Other events, not just plays, were also set in the theater.
